Assement In Today's Manufacturing Programs

One of the more challenging obstacles that teachers face is how to assess wether or not a student is truly learning what we are teaching. I am always looking for new ways to assess my students on a daily basis. I am curious to see what others are doing in their programs on top of simply checking projects.

I agree that assessment is a tough challenge. There is so much to teach in the area of machining that I struggle with whether or not it is better to go in depth into very specific areas and test and test until they have it or do I go over more of a variety of concepts/skills etc but not as deep and do less testing? In my program, I give several of my own tests, some written, some practical as well as doing some of the NIMS certifications and the Haas Mill level 2 certification developed by Ken Wright. I really do believe in doing certification type of credential testing that proves that the student can work under pressure and can set a goal and achieve it. I also like to use motivating projects as an assessment tool. When a student has a finished project in hand, it does show that the student had to have learned many things in order to do the project. However when we take the project to the point of measuring and inspection like we would do in industry, then we may have a situation in which the part "fails" but yet the student did learn certain things. In this type of case, the real world of industry would deem the part as a failure but as teachers we would still look at the positive things the student learned from the experience. I think most of us would agree that we sometimes learn more from our mistakes than from our successes. This assessment discussion will also be a forum at the National Conference at Dunwoody College this summer and we would invite teachers to take part in this written forum as well as coming to the discussion in person. We are planning to do a "resource swap" during the discussion in which teachers can share some of their best assessment tools, strategies, tests etc.. It would be very helpful if teachers could bring photo copies or electronic documents that they could share with other teachers. Thanks to any of you who give some input into this forum.
